About the Durrmu Arts Centre design:
Fi (String game) by Regina Pilawuk Wilson.

Regina Pilawuk Wilson, a Ngan’gikurrungurr woman, was born in 1948 in the Daly River region of the Northern Territory. Together with her late husband, Harold Wilson, Regina founded the Peppimenarti (meaning ‘large rock’) Community as a permanent settlement for the Ngan’gikurrungurr people in the Daly River region, south west of Darwin in 1973.

The subject matter of Regina’s works is based around the practice of weaving fibre art, and stems directly from her skills as a master weaver. Winner of the NATSIAA General Painting Prize in 2003, she is considered one of the greatest living painters in Australia.

Fi was a past time of the people in the Daly River/Peppimenarti region. The string was made from rolled sand palm and the games were taught by the older women to children as a way of having fun and sharing stories. The black string represents the long-necked turtle, the red rectangle represents the arriving storm cloud, and the grey vertical shape shows the long spears that were used for fighting and hunting animals.

Durrmu Arts Aboriginal Corporation represents the Artists of Peppimenarti, 320 km South West of Darwin. Durrmu Arts is renowned for its fine, contemporary art production, including acrylic painting and fibre work.
