About the Jilamara Arts & Crafts Association design:
Mupiti Yirrikapayi by Geraldine Pilakui.

Geraldine Pilakui was born in 1978 and lives on Melville Island. Geraldine learns from the older people about Tiwi culture so that when she gets old she can pass it on to her grandchildren. Her motifs include traditional designs from the older and experienced artists, bush tucker and the native flora and fauna that inhabit the Tiwi Islands. To paint the “mother lines” Geraldine uses the traditional Kayimwagakimi comb technique used for body painting.

Yirrikapayi is the crocodile, and Geraldine’s totem/dance.

Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association (Jilamara) is located in the community of Milikapiti on Melville Island in the Tiwi Islands, the islands of smiles. Jilamara artists are world renowned and produce high quality traditional Tiwi art. Working only with natural ochres from the immediate surrounds, Jilamara artists create paintings, works on paper, barks, ironwood tutuni and pukamani poles and pandanus weavings. Keeping culture strong and handing down knowledge to Tiwi youth are core values of this not for profit indigenous owned organisation.
